Why should we invest?

It is estimated that over 140 million working days are lost to sickness absence in the UK each year at a cost of approximately £15billion per year. Musculoskeletal issues are cited as one of the biggest causes of sickness absence, accounting for almost 20% of all absences.

It will come as no shock that absenteeism incurs a cost to employers; however it is now estimated that presenteeism - continuing to work when at suboptimal health - is costing even more due to the decrease in productivity.

Now more than ever, it is vital that both employers and employees recognise the importance of health and wellbeing in our working lives.

At Balance Physiotherapy and Wellbeing, we approach health and fitness holistically, and feel that achieving optimal wellbeing is often complex, consisting of many elements - physical, psychological, economic, spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual...the list goes on.

By recognising risk factors in our work tasks, environments or habits, and by implementing health and wellbeing initiatives, the morale and happiness of employees can improve, and you can see a resulting rise in productivity, as well as decreased rates of absenteeism and presenteeism.

Working with other health and wellbeing professionals, specialising in areas such as mental health and sleep, we can provide you with a personalised wellbeing package to suit your company needs, highlight risk factors within your business, and help you to develop and implement wellbeing initiatives to create lasting positive change.

The evidence...

'There is a large, positive correlation between employee well-being and aggregate, firm-level measures of performance across all types of industries' - Global Happiness and Wellbeing report, 2019

'employees with musculoskeletal and other (chronic) health conditions report higher rates of absenteeism and presenteeism than workers without such conditions' - RAND Europe, 2015

'A longitudinal study of five employers showed that reduction in risk in multiple aspects of well-being is positively associated with improved productivity outcomes including presenteeism, absenteeism, and job performance' - Y. Shi, 2013

'physical exercise not only improves life satisfaction, but also cognitive functioning, especially executive control, which allows planning and self-control.' Kramer & Erickson, 2007; Colcombe & Kramer, 2003

'Recent experimental evidence suggests that a meaningful increase in well-being yields an increase in productivity - Global Happiness and Wellbeing report, 2019

'findings suggest that companies which pay attention to health and wellbeing at board level report lower rates of absenteeism and presenteeism' - Rand Europe, 2015

'For individuals with common health conditions (mental health, cardio-respiratory and musculoskeletal condition) consensus holds that – for the good of their health – they should remain in, or return as soon as possible to, work' Waddell and Burton, 2006

'investment in staff health and well-being services will more than pay for itself through reducing sickness absence and improving productivity' - The Boorman Report, 2009

For the economy as a whole, the increase in output from people being in work rather than off sick is estimated to be around £100 million - The Frost/Black Report, 2011
